UK Year 13 (Level 3) award

This course is an alternative to the many available to post-16 international students coming to the UK.

For who?

Students who have completed 12 years of schooling may need a ‘bridging’ year to prepare them to apply for university courses, but want this year to be rigorous in academic course content, yet cannot complete GCE A level examinations after three terms of studies. Some candidates may have completed a year of predominantly English language studies prior to starting this course. Candidates must be at least 17yrs+ by 01 September preceding the course start date and must have attained a minimum English Language level of IELTS 5.0 or equivalent prior to starting the course. Our English and Mathematics entry tests must be taken by applicants. Students are placed in the upper sixth (Year 13).

Our aim

This is to prepare students fully for UK undergraduate life at some of the country’s very best universities by offering a more traditional academic pathway based on GCE A level studies.

The course structure

  • Students choose three subjects from our GCE A-levels on offer and attend A-level classes, complete A-level tasks and assignments, and are assessed internally. Subjects on offer include: Mathematics; Further Mathematics; Psychology; Chemistry; Biology; Physics; History; Geography; Economics; Business Studies; Government & Politics; Art & Design and Photography.
  • All students are allocated a supervisor and must complete the Level 3 AQA Extended Project Qualification diploma.
  • Students will complete one GCE A-level subject and take the final public examinations, in a language or General Studies (until 2018).
  • Students will follow an IELTS preparation course and take the test at least twice during the year. Students will also be placed in English language support lessons.

  • Students are assessed through weekly TRaC™ tests, end of unit examinations and set assignments.
  • The EPQ is externally moderated by AQA, with a grade awarded from A* to E.
  • The single A-level is externally marked, with a grade awarded from A* to E.
  • The final internally-assessed Year 13 Level 3 award can be gained as a Pass (40%), a Merit (65%) or a Distinction (85%).

Universities may make conditional offers through UCAS as follows, for example:

  • Candidate must attain an overall score of at least 65% on the internally-assessed course components and
  • A minimum overall score of 6.5 in IELTS and
  • At least a C grade in the EPQ and/or a pass in the single A-level
This is purely for illustration. Some universities will include the EPQ/single A-level in an offer and others will not.

The Earlscliffe UK Year 13 (Level 3) award gives students a serious academic course based on GCE A- level syllabi and the Level 3 EPQ and single A-level, thereby giving leading universities both confidence in its integrity and in their decisions to make Earlscliffe students conditional offers.
